STDs or Sexually Transmitted Diseases are most often spread through sexual intercourse- be it vaginal sex, anal sex, or oral sex. However, in some cases, STDs can also be passed from one person to another through blood. For example, a person who shared needles with someone who already has a form of STD when injecting intravenous drugs, can be contaminated with a sexually transmitted disease through blood infection. People who have multiple sex partners, people who have sex with someone who has had many partners, and people who don’t use protection when having sexual intercourse are at a higher risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease.
STDs are caused by bacteria hidden in semen, blood, vaginal secretions, and sometimes saliva. Bacterial STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are spread through any type of sex and skin-to-skin contact. Viral STDs, which include HIV, genital herpes, genital warts, and hepatitis get transmitted through semen/ vaginal fluid, blood, or genital contact.
The only guaranteed way to completely avoid STDs is to not have any kind of sexual contact. If you do have sex, safer sex lowers your chances of getting an STD. Using protection like condoms act as a barrier that block fluids and skin-to-skin contact that can pass STDs.
Symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases include pain, swelling, rashes or sores on your genitals, and discharge from your vagina or penis that has a different smell, color, or texture. The only way to know for sure is to get tested.
